A lot of Japanese men like them because they are cute, and a lot of Japanese women like to imitate cloths and hairstyles.
The following two idols, both of them are actresses as well as singers, and they are both named "Aya".
Aya Matsuura, whose fans call her「あやや」, and Aya Ueto.

Japanese idols have traditionally had a kind of sweet wholesome image. But lately some of them had a new and slightly different kind of quality:「萌え」(moe). It is quite hard to describe in English, but it is physically the kind of cuteness. The younger characters have it in Japanese video games and anime and manga.

The centre of "moe culture" is a part of Tokyo called Akihabara, which is sometimes abbreviated to Akiba. Where is the biggest concentration of electronics stores in Japan. Also it is known around the world, as the centre of Japanese culture.
AKB48 (Pronounced EI-KAY-BEE FOURTY-EIGHT) is an idol group performing in Akihabara. They perform every day at their very own theatre in Akibabara.
